It’s hard to believe that it's been more than half a year since I officially started offering art classes at the studio. From just one or two students, now almost every week my schedule is filled with teaching art to students of all ages. Now I am not only teach art classes at my own studio, but also work at The International School of the Hague, where I teach drawing classes to students from diverse cultural backgrounds. This experience has deepened my understanding of how to communicate and interact with students from different cultures and has given me valuable insights into cross-cultural art education.
Some may wonder, as a photographer, how did I suddenly become an art teacher? In fact, I’ve been learning drawing since I was six. In high school, I passed the entrance exam for the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and I later graduated from Southwest Jiaotong University with a degree in Environmental Art Design. After moving to the Netherlands, I studied photography for three years in Amsterdam, alongside advanced Western painting techniques. During the process of raising my child, I realized the significant impact of art education on children, which led me to open art classes. This experience deepened my understanding of art education. I am now pursuing further professional studies in art education at the Amsterdam University of the Arts. The foundation for my career as a designer and photographer can be traced back to my early drawing studies. As a mother of a 13-year-old, I also have deep insights into child-rearing. Opening art classes is the best way to share everything I’ve learned.
I love drawing, photography, art, and education. I believe art is a unique way of expression that helps children explore their inner world and enhances their creativity and aesthetic abilities. As an art teacher, I hope to not only help children develop a lifelong, healthy hobby, but also ignite their passion for art, allowing them to learn and grow in a joyful environment.
在教学过程中,很多问题被重复问到,所以现在把绘画学习中大家关心的问题进行汇总
During the teaching process, many questions have been repeatedly asked, so now I am summarizing some of the most frequently asked questions about learning art.
儿童为什么要学习绘画?几岁开始学画画合适?
Why should children learn painting? What age is appropriate to start learning?
First of all, painting promotes the development of children’s creativity and imagination. Through drawing, children can express their inner feelings and ideas, which helps them better understand themselves and boost their self-confidence. In addition, drawing helps develop children’s attention and observation skills, while also instilling aesthetic concepts, enabling them to better understand and appreciate beautiful things.
There is no fixed answer to when is the right age for children to start learning drawing, as every child is different. Generally, children can start to be exposed to drawing around 2-3 years old. At this stage, the goal is to promote hand-eye coordination and expressive abilities through drawing activities. If a child shows a strong interest in painting, you may consider focusing more on it around 4 years old.
画画到底应该教什么?好的绘画老师是什么样的?
What should be taught in drawing classes? What makes a good art teacher?
Art teaching should effectively combine technique and creativity. While it’s important to nurture a child’s imagination and creativity, we should not entirely abandon basic practices. Basic skills include mastering color, composition, and sketching, while creativity requires students to freely express their ideas and feelings based on these skills. A good art teacher should have a deep understanding of art and be able to apply various teaching methods and techniques. They should also be able to recognize the preferences and strengths of different children and help them discover and develop their artistic talents.
国内与国外艺术教育的不同:优势与融合Differences in Art Education Between Domestic and International Systems: Advantages and Integration
因此,最为高效且富有趣味的艺术教育方式,应该是两者相结合的产物。There are significant differences between domestic and international art education, especially in the field of painting. Traditional Chinese art education focuses on mastering techniques and inheriting traditional arts, while Western education places greater emphasis on creativity and individuality. Both systems have their own strengths, and there is no inherent hierarchy between them. On the contrary, I believe that by combining the advantages of both, we can create a more efficient and engaging educational approach, particularly in the early stages of children’s art education.
In the early art education of young children, I greatly appreciate the Western focus on stimulating and nurturing imagination and creativity. At the same time, I also believe that traditional Chinese aesthetic education plays a crucial role in the developmental process. Chinese art education helps students build a solid foundation in the basics and emphasizes mastering structure and form, while Western education encourages students to showcase their individuality and provides a more flexible, diverse approach to understanding works and themes.
Therefore, the most efficient and enjoyable form of art education should be a product of combining both systems.
素描有必要学习吗?几岁开始比较合适?
Is It Necessary to Learn Sketching? What Is the Right Age to Start?
Sketching is an important foundation for learning to draw as it helps children understand space, structure, and light. Generally, after the age of 9, children are more capable of starting to learn sketching as they have developed the necessary hand-eye coordination and cognitive ability. Sketching is not only useful for professional learning but is also an art form worth exploring for those driven by personal interest.
如何激发孩子对绘画的兴趣?家庭日常可以怎么做?
How can parents spark a child's interest in drawing? What can be done at home?
At home, parents can spark their child’s interest in drawing by providing a variety of art tools and materials, taking children to museums or art exhibitions, encouraging them to appreciate artworks from peers, or sharing their works with others, and even encouraging family creative sessions.
去看展,去美术馆有必要吗?
Is it necessary to visit exhibitions and art galleries?
Visiting exhibitions and art galleries is highly beneficial. It helps broaden our horizons, allows us to learn about different artists' styles and thoughts, and appreciate the historical and artistic value of their works.
As an art teacher and a mother, I fully understand the positive impact that art education has on children's development. Through art, children not only enhance their creativity and expressive abilities, but also cultivate focus and aesthetic awareness in a fun and challenging environment. In the future, I will continue to grow alongside the children in my studio and art classes at The Hague International School, inspiring them to unlock their artistic potential. I am also excited to announce that our studio will be opening a new location in The Hague from April, continuing to provide high-quality art education to more students who love art. I look forward to exploring and growing with more children and parents on this artistic journey.
